Welcome to the Department of Physical Therapy
Alabama State University offers the Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. This three-year degree prepares graduates as entry-level physical therapists eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Exam administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Licensure is necessary to practice physical therapy.
Physical Therapy is a dynamic profession with an established theoretical base and widespread clinical applications in the preservation, development, and restoration of optimal physical function. Every day, physical therapists in the United States help approximately one million people alleviate pain; prevent the onset and progression of impairment, functional limitation, disability, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease, or other causes; and restore, maintain and promote overall fitness and optimum quality of life as related to movement and health.
As essential participants in the health care delivery system, physical therapists assume leadership roles in rehabilitation services, prevention and health maintenance programs, and professional and community organizations. They also play important roles in developing health care policy and appropriate standards for the various elements of physical therapist practice to ensure availability, accessibility, and excellence in the delivery of physical therapy services.

NATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY MONTH: "CHOOSE TO MOVE"
The American Physical Therapy Association Celebrates 30th National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM).
“National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) is an opportunity every year to take time to recognize the outstanding impact physical therapists and physical therapist assistants have on society and health care," said APTA President Roger Herr, PT, MPA. "It's also an opportunity to amplify awareness of the profession in our communities."
This year's NPTM theme is "Choose to Move," which emphasizes physical therapists' unique value as movement experts and the benefits of regular physical activity.
NPTM is also an opportunity to host service events in the community, at a place of work, on campus, etc. PTs, PTAs, and students educate the public about the value of physical therapy and how it helps get — and keeps — people moving.
This year, ASU DPT faculty and students traveled to the VA Outpatient Center in Columbus, Ga., to celebrate NPTM.
