honor band & Choir

Thank you for your interest in the Alabama State University Honor Band & Choir Festival. The purpose of the Honor Band & Choir Festival at ASU is to recognize outstanding middle school musicians in grades 6-8, and outstanding high school musicians in grades 9-12. The middle school honor band/choir typically takes place during the fall semester, while the high school honor band/choir typically takes place during the spring semester. The festivals serve to encourage and promote the performance of concert repertoire and typically feature a guest clinician/conductor who works with the groups during the festival. The festivals typically features a showcase concert by current ASU music students, masterclass sessions led by ASU music faculty members, and a grand finale concert featuring the festival participants that is open to friends and family to attend.

Directors may use the links below to complete recommendations for their students. Selected students will be notified of their acceptance via email. After registration closes, a detailed information packet will be sent to directors, including the complete festival schedule, lodging options for out-of-town students, and music excerpts for seating auditions. There will be a participation fee of $65 per student, payable upon arrival on campus for the festival via check or money order made out to ASU Foundation, with "Music" in the memo line. Alternatively, Directors may pay for all of their students at once online at ASU Foundation, selecting "Music Department" as the Gift Designation, and then providing a copy of the receipt at registration.

The High School Honor Band & Choir Festival weekend also serves as an audition opportunity for high school seniors interested in auditioning for a talent scholarship to attend ASU. Band students interested in auditioning for a scholarship award should prepare two contrasting pieces (one technical and one lyrical) in addition to all twelve major scales and arpeggios. Choir students interested in auditioning for a scholarship award should prepare two songs (classical, spirituals, hymns, or musical theatre).

At ASU, we are always excited to work with the wonderful students who attend our Honor events, and we look forward to providing a musically rewarding experience for all involved. For any questions involving the Honor Band or Honor Choir Festival, please contact Dr. Russell Greene at rgreene@alasu.edu
