Welcome to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER). The HPER Department at Alabama State University is a part of the College of Education (COE). The Department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physical Education (P-12) and Health Education (6-12) with graduates receiving teacher certification from the State of Alabama, and an undergraduate Physical Education non-teaching degree with a concentration in coaching. In addition, a non-teaching degree in Recreation with a concentration in Recreational Therapy. The Department also offers Alternative “A” degrees in Physical Education and Health Education.

All teacher preparation programs in the College of Education are NCATE accredited, which ensures that the Department is committed to excellence, thereby providing a variety of courses that acknowledge the diverse interests of HPER majors, as well as the general student body. HPER academic programs are built on content, practical experiences, collaborative research, community partnerships, scholarly achievement, and service learning that prepare students to meet professional and personal goals.
