  • Bachelor of Music Education (Instrumental or Vocal/Choral Emphasis)

    Our Bachelor of Music Education degree will prepare you to become a certified general music teacher or a band or choir director at the K-12 level.

    Our Master of Education in Music degree will further your content knowledge at the graduate level, or if you are seeking initial certification via the Alt-A pathway, will prepare you to become a certified general music teacher or a band or choral director at the K-12 level.

What Can You Do With a Music Degree?

Earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music or a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Alabama State University will prepare you for a wide variety of career paths in the Arts. Recent graduates from the music program have gone on to become performers, conductors, composers, recording technicians and educators, with many ASU alumni being admitted into prestigious graduate schools including the New England Conservatory of Music, the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, the Longy School of Music at Bard College, the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University, the College of Music at the University of North Texas, and the College of Music at Florida State University, among others. 

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for music directors and composers are projected to grow 6% over the next decade, about as fast as average for other occupational fields. Jobs for musicians and singers will see even bigger growth, at 11% over the same amount of time.

For Bachelor of Music Education degree graduates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts employment growth between 7% and 8%, depending on which grades are taught. Our music education degree program at ASU currently boasts a 100% job placement rate for our graduates due to the ongoing teacher shortage in the greater southeast region.
